The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday lodged a police complaint alleging that a woman attempted to attack former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a knife near her residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area.
In an email to the officer-in-charge of Kalighat Police Station, Trinamool Congress Joint General Secretary Dola Sen alleged that the incident took place around 6 p.m. and identified the woman as Tannishtha Saha, who she claimed was a civic volunteer and a drug addict.
According to Sen’s complaint, the woman allegedly claimed to be Banerjee’s niece, hurled abuses and tried to approach the former Chief Minister in a threatening manner. Sen also raised concerns about how an individual could reach the vicinity of the residence of a person protected under the Z-plus security category.
The complaint requested police to record the information under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and consider photographs and videos submitted as supporting material.
Speaking to media persons, Sen said she informed two police constables present at the spot about the incident. She alleged that the constables told her they belonged to the West Bengal Police and could not act because the area fell under Kolkata Police’s jurisdiction.
Sen further claimed that the woman was taken away by police and served tea. She questioned the security arrangements around Banerjee’s residence and made a political allegation against current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, asking whether he wanted his predecessor to remain alive.
There was no immediate response from Kolkata Police or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the allegations at the time the report was filed. The claims in the complaint had not been independently verified.
