A woman and her mother have been arrested in connection with the death of the woman’s live-in partner, a software engineer who was allegedly stabbed during a domestic altercation at their rented flat in Kolkata’s Garia area, police said on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Sarthak Sarkar, worked at a company in Salt Lake’s Sector V. His body was found at the flat on Saturday night, where he lived with his girlfriend, Sanchalika Basu.
According to the police, an argument broke out between the couple on Saturday night, during which Basu allegedly struck Sarkar on the shoulder with a sharp weapon. Neighbours rushed to the flat after hearing screams and took him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Basu was arrested following an initial investigation. Police subsequently arrested her mother, Moumita Basu, on suspicion of being involved in the killing.
Investigators suspect that the mother may also have played a role in the incident. Both accused are expected to be interrogated in custody as the investigation progresses.
Sarkar, a resident of Barasat in North 24 Parganas district, had rented the Garia flat with Basu, who police said had studied at Techno India Institute.
The motive behind the altercation remains unclear. Police are examining the circumstances leading to the stabbing and the extent of the mother’s alleged involvement.
The incident has triggered concern in the locality during Kali Puja, with residents demanding strict punishment for those responsible.
