Veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu has revealed that he did not know he would be sharing the microphone with Udit Narayan for their song ‘Suniyo Zara’ until he reached the recording studio.
Speaking to IANS at his residence in Mumbai’s Andheri West during the song’s promotions, Kumar Sanu said the music producer had approached him to lend his voice to a song without sharing details about the other singers or the actor for whom it was being recorded.
He said, “Actually, I didn’t know which actor I was singing for or who was singing with me. I didn’t know that. So what happened was that the music producer asked me if I would like to lend my voice to a song, and I said yes. So I went and found out that a song was being composed for this year’s film ‘Suryaa’. I asked him, ‘So, who is singing with me?’. He said, ‘Udit sir was singing and another guy was singing’”.
Recalling his reaction, Sanu said he was delighted to learn that Udit Narayan was part of the song, given their long-standing friendship and history of working together. He added that the composition turned out well.
Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan were among the most prominent playback singers of the 1990s. While they competed professionally for songs and recognition as leading actors’ preferred voices, both have maintained that their relationship was never marked by personal animosity.
Udit Narayan rose to prominence with ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, while Kumar Sanu made his breakthrough with ‘Aashiqui’. Sanu won five consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer between 1991 and 1995, before Udit received the award for ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’.
The two singers have also collaborated on popular tracks such as ‘Neend Churai Meri’ and ‘Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai Dil Se’. ‘Suniyo Zara’ has been released under the Zee Music Company label.
