The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Sunday lodged a police complaint against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that protesters linked to the party had undermined the sanctity of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in the national capital a day earlier.
DSGMC President Harmeet Singh Kalka condemned the incident, saying it had triggered widespread anger within the Sikh community.
Speaking to IANS, Kalka accused the AAP of using religious institutions for political purposes. He also expressed disappointment over a social media post by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who had claimed that Delhi Police personnel forcibly entered the gurdwara.
Kalka said the conduct of police personnel was a separate issue but alleged that the protesters had been provoked and brought into the gurdwara on Saturday.
According to him, the group took out pamphlets, placards and banners from their bags after gathering inside the premises and began raising slogans. He alleged that the incident was a planned attempt to undermine the sanctity of the religious site and create a narrative that could lead to restrictions on people seeking shelter there.
Urging political groups to hold demonstrations at designated protest sites, Kalka stressed that gurdwaras should remain places of worship rather than venues for political agitation.
He said those whose grievances remained unaddressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah or Prime Minister Narendra Modi could visit the gurdwara to offer prayers.
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib Chairman Bhupinder Singh Bhullar said he had met New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma along with Kalka and other DSGMC members to submit the complaint.
Bhullar clarified that protesters were welcome to visit the gurdwara to pay obeisance and partake in langar. The committee would also arrange accommodation if required, he said, adding that medical facilities and other assistance had been provided during the protesters’ previous visit amid the July protests and would be made available again if needed.
However, Bhullar asserted that demonstrations would not be permitted inside the gurdwara, irrespective of the political party involved.
He further alleged that all those who entered the premises on Saturday belonged to the AAP, and confirmed that the complaint had been filed against the party and Kejriwal.
