India will field a fresh squad at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, beginning October 12, following a rigorous national selection process. However, visa delays have cast uncertainty over the participation of several wrestlers in the Greco-Roman and women’s categories.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has maintained its policy of fielding separate squads for closely scheduled international competitions, a directive also enforced during the recent Asian Games and senior World Championship trials. The approach prevents top wrestlers from overlapping across senior and age-group events, creating opportunities for athletes who qualified through domestic trials.
The Indian contingent will be led by Rohit in the men’s 57kg freestyle category, Sweety in women’s 53kg wrestling and Vishvajit Ramchandra More in the Greco-Roman 55kg category.
While the entire 10-member men’s freestyle team has received clearance to travel, the final participation of wrestlers in the Greco-Roman and women’s categories remains uncertain, with several athletes still awaiting US visas.
The championships will open with the Greco-Roman events from October 12 to 14, followed by the women’s competitions from October 14 to 16. The men’s freestyle events will conclude the tournament from October 16 to 18.
