The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest in Srinagar on Wednesday against the National Conference (NC)-led government in Jammu and Kashmir, accusing it of pursuing an “anti-national” agenda through resolutions and demands concerning autonomy and the restoration of the region’s special status.
The protest was led by BJP leader Altaf Thakur, with demonstrators burning an effigy of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to express their opposition to the ruling party’s position on constitutional and political issues.
Addressing reporters, Thakur accused the NC government of diverting attention from public concerns by raising issues such as autonomy and the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s pre-1953 constitutional position.
He alleged that the NC was attempting to advance Pakistan’s agenda by bringing forward resolutions concerning Article 370, Article 35A, autonomy and self-rule.
“No power on earth can bring autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir. When Omar Abdullah was a minister in the Atal Bihari government, the autonomy resolution was thrown into the dustbin, and the same should be done to the present resolution,” Thakur said.
The BJP leader also accused the NC government of failing to fulfil its electoral commitments, particularly those relating to daily wagers and National Health Mission (NHM) workers.
Thakur alleged that the government had not delivered on its promises and questioned its intention to fulfil them in the future. He called for the dismissal of the elected government and the imposition of Lieutenant Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
He further demanded that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered against the NC, alleging that the party was attempting to promote the agenda of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the Union Territory. These allegations were made by the BJP leader during the protest.
The demonstration is part of the BJP’s continuing opposition to a recent resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, which, according to the party, links the demand for restoration of statehood with earlier resolutions seeking autonomy and the restoration of special status.
The BJP has maintained that such demands are unacceptable, while the NC-led government has been at the centre of the political debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status, autonomy and statehood.
