Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces of Kunar and Paktika on Monday, with Taliban authorities reporting three civilian deaths and four injuries in Kunar and warning that Afghanistan would give an “appropriate response” to the attacks.
Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the strikes, saying they targeted Afghan territory and civilians. He said one woman and two men were killed, while two women and two men were injured in Kunar.
Mujahid also said a house and a local shop were struck in Paktika, but reported no casualties there. The claims could not be independently verified. Pakistani authorities had not publicly commented on the latest strikes at the time of reporting.
“We condemn this aggression and oppression and consider it a repetition of crimes. Pakistan’s military establishment, in order to divert attention from its own internal security failures, has once again committed such a crime. Afghans will give an appropriate response to this aggression, God willing,” Mujahid said in a post on X.
The latest strikes come amid months of worsening tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, including repeated cross-border exchanges and disputes over militant activity. Islamabad has accused the Taliban authorities of allowing Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants to operate from Afghan territory, an allegation Kabul rejects.
The United Nations has previously documented significant civilian casualties during the cross-border hostilities. UNAMA said Pakistani airstrikes on June 28 in Paktya, Paktika and Kunar killed at least 28 civilians and injured 49 others, with women and children among the victims. Pakistan confirmed that its security forces conducted the strikes.
UNAMA has repeatedly called on both sides to comply with international humanitarian law and take measures to protect civilians from harm.
The latest escalation follows a series of incidents along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and comes despite diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions. The two sides remain divided over Pakistan’s demands for action against TTP militants and the Taliban’s rejection of allegations that Afghanistan is being used as a base for attacks against Pakistan.
