Iran will continue pursuing a negotiated path towards peace under its recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States, provided Washington takes steps to rebuild trust, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Pezeshkian said Tehran was seeking to advance the peace process on the basis of the MoU and that the current situation offered an opportunity to reach an agreement.
“Now is the best time to reach an agreement, as there is solidarity, power and unity in the country,” he said.
Pezeshkian said Iran was prepared to use the MoU as the foundation for further negotiations if the US helped create an atmosphere of trust instead of maintaining what Tehran considers a climate of distrust.
He also stressed that Iran would follow a reciprocal approach in implementing its commitments, saying Tehran’s obligations would correspond to the extent of US compliance with the agreement.
Pezeshkian warned that Iran would not accept negotiations conducted under pressure or the threat of force. He said Tehran’s future course of action would ultimately be guided by decisions of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
In an interview published on the Iranian President’s office website on Friday, Pezeshkian had also defended Tehran’s decision to enter talks with Washington and sign the MoU aimed at ending the conflict.
He said Iran would continue honouring its commitments as long as the US fulfilled its obligations, but would not remain bound by commitments that Washington failed to implement.
Earlier this week, Pezeshkian rejected speculation that he was stepping down, saying he would continue his work “resolutely”. His remarks came amid reports of differences within Iran’s leadership over the MoU.
Iran and the US signed the agreement in June on ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon. The two sides had planned to hold negotiations within 60 days to reach a final agreement, but renewed regional escalation has cast uncertainty over the future of the talks.
