Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday expressed serious concern over repeated disruptions of peaceful Sikh Nagar Kirtans in New Zealand, including the latest incident reported from Tauranga.
In a post on social media platform X, Badal described the incidents as deeply troubling and said they pose a threat to the religious freedom of the Sikh community abroad. He emphasised that Nagar Kirtans are sacred religious processions rooted in Sikh tradition, symbolising peace, unity, and selfless service.
“The Sikh community, which always prays for Sarbat Da Bhala (the welfare of all), has shown exemplary restraint even in such sensitive moments,” Badal said, expressing anguish over what he termed “repeated disruptions” of peaceful religious observances.
Taking a strong diplomatic stance, the SAD president urged S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, to immediately raise the matter with the New Zealand government to ensure the safety and protection of Sikh religious activities.
“Religious expression must be safe for all. Shiromani Akali Dal stands firmly with the Sikh diaspora,” Badal added.
Background: First Such Incident in New Zealand Raised Alarm Earlier
The Tauranga incident is not the first of its kind in New Zealand. The Sikh community had earlier raised serious concerns following an incident during a Nagar Kirtan held in another New Zealand city, where a small group of protesters allegedly attempted to disrupt the procession. That episode marked the first reported interference with a Sikh religious procession in the country and had prompted strong reactions from Sikh organisations and community leaders.
At the time, Sikh groups had stressed that the Nagar Kirtan was conducted with full cooperation of local authorities and in accordance with local laws. The incident was widely viewed as an isolated but alarming breach of religious harmony in a country otherwise known for its multicultural ethos and respect for minority rights.
The recurrence of such incidents has now renewed calls from Sikh leaders for stronger safeguards and proactive engagement by host governments to ensure that religious minorities can practice their faith freely and without fear.
Community leaders have reiterated that Sikh religious processions worldwide are peaceful in nature and often involve humanitarian activities such as free community kitchens (langar), blood donation drives, and social service initiatives.
