AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday invoked the victory of Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in the US to call for strengthening Muslim political identity in Uttar Pradesh, saying that an Abdul would now become a leader in the state.
“An ‘Abdul’ has won in Michigan; now, the ‘Abdul’ of Uttar Pradesh must strengthen his own political identity,” Owaisi posted on X.
Reacting to the US midterm election results, Owaisi said attempts had been made by ‘Sanghis’ to mock the name Abdul. He said the time had come to demonstrate that the community would not remain subservient to others.
Speaking to the media at his party headquarters, Darussalam, Owaisi said, “BJP used to say ‘Abdul makes puncture’. We are saying Abdul will now become leader. He will not lay carpets nor be scared of the RSS nor bow before anybody. Abdul will do his job and become a leader.”
Owaisi also criticised the BJP-led Centre over its submission to the Delhi High Court that the century-old Qadeemi Masjid, located within the Krishi Bhawan compound in New Delhi, should be removed to facilitate the redevelopment of the Common Central Secretariat under the Central Vista project.
Calling the mosque part of India’s cultural and historical heritage, Owaisi said it was built before Krishi Bhawan and was registered as Waqf property. He argued that the government was not its owner and said any dispute over ownership should be taken to the Waqf Tribunal.
Questioning the Centre’s argument that the mosque was “impermissible and incompatible with the secular character of government property”, Owaisi asked whether demolishing a registered Waqf property enjoying legal protection was consistent with secularism.
He also referred to the Bhoomi Pooja held for the Central Vista project, questioning the government’s position on religious practices in public projects.
On the issue of electoral rolls, Owaisi sought a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah after Hyderabad District Election Officer R.V. Karnan said no illegal immigrants had been found in the city’s electoral rolls. He also recalled earlier BJP statements about conducting surgical strikes in Hyderabad.
Owaisi said the poor had suffered during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and claimed that AIMIM had helped all eligible voters, irrespective of religion, during the process.
