Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday described the state’s success in the Supreme Court over Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) arrears and its financial rights as a historic achievement and a victory for the people of the state.
Under the arrangement, Himachal Pradesh will receive 60 crore units of electricity annually for 20 years, potentially generating income of Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore over the period, Sukhu said.
The Chief Minister said the decision could help the state earn additional revenue of up to Rs 1,000 crore annually if the electricity rate is fixed at Rs 13 to Rs 14 per unit. Even at Rs 6 per unit, the state would receive at least Rs 500 crore every year, he added.
Sukhu said the additional income would strengthen the state’s finances and accelerate development works. He described the BBMB outcome as the fourth major success of his government in protecting the state’s interests, following its efforts concerning Wildflower Hall, JSW and the Kishau Dam.
Congratulating the state’s nearly 75 lakh residents and 24 lakh families, Sukhu said protecting Himachal Pradesh’s resources and wealth was among the government’s top priorities. The additional revenue, he said, would be used to improve education and healthcare, develop roads and infrastructure, create employment opportunities for young people and ensure timely financial benefits for government employees.
The Chief Minister said the people had entrusted him with the responsibility of protecting the state’s resources for five years and that the Congress government was committed to making Himachal Pradesh self-reliant.
