Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn once opened up about his relationship with his late father, renowned action director Veeru Devgan, during his appearance on the adventure reality show Into The Wild With Bear Grylls in 2021. Reflecting on parenthood and the loss of a loved one, the actor explained how a person’s understanding of their parents evolves with age and experience.
During the conversation, host Bear Grylls referred to the loss of Ajay’s father, asking him about the difficult period following his death.
“Yes, two years ago,” Ajay replied.
Grylls observed that the preceding two years must have been particularly difficult for the actor.
Sharing his perspective on the parent-child relationship, Ajay said people often fail to appreciate their parents’ wisdom when they are young, only to understand their sacrifices later in life.
“It’s tough to lose parents, because you don’t care about them till the age of 20 in your life. You think they are stupid. They don’t know anything. You know everything,” he said.
The Golmaal actor added that becoming a parent often brings a deeper understanding of the care and concern parents have for their children.
“Then when you have your own children, then you understand what parents are. They want the best for you. By then, it takes a lot of time to understand this,” he said.
During the conversation, Ajay also spoke about his father’s health problems. Responding to Grylls’ question about what had happened to Veeru Devgan, he revealed that his father had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and sustained numerous injuries while performing stunts during his career in the film industry.
“Yes, he had Alzheimer’s,” Ajay said, adding that his father had suffered several injuries because of stunt work.
Recalling one incident from a film shoot, the actor said his father had sustained a head injury while performing a stunt that involved moving across a car.
Ajay explained that stunt performers faced additional risks at the time because real glass was often used in vehicles during action sequences. Unlike the toughened glass used in modern productions, traditional glass could cause serious injuries when broken.
The conversation offered a personal glimpse into Ajay’s bond with his father and highlighted how life experiences, particularly raising children, can change one’s understanding of parental love and sacrifice.
Veeru Devgan was a respected action director in Hindi cinema, known for his contribution to stunt choreography and action sequences across numerous films.
