Traditional Punjabi Bhangra beats, enthusiastic cheers and warm hospitality marked the arrival of international hockey teams at Burlton Park in Jalandhar ahead of the Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to begin on October 27.
Teams from Bangladesh, Japan, China and Malaysia arrived at the venue for practice sessions, drawing crowds of local residents and young aspiring hockey players who gathered to welcome the visiting athletes. The celebrations reflected Punjab’s rich sporting culture as the city prepared to host the prestigious continental tournament.
The championship marks a historic occasion for Punjab, which is hosting the Asian Champions Trophy for the first time. The district administration has made extensive arrangements to ensure a smooth tournament experience, including facilities, security and hospitality for all six participating teams: India, Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
The tournament will open on October 27 at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar. The opening-day fixtures will feature Malaysia against China, followed by Japan taking on South Korea, before hosts India face Bangladesh after the opening ceremony.
Further pool matches are scheduled in Jalandhar on October 29, 30, November 1 and 2. The competition will then move to the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali, which will host the semi-finals on November 4. The tournament will conclude with the final on November 5.
