The Punjab Police, with support from Central agencies, have secured the deportation of gangster Gurwinder alias Afridi from Ethiopia following a 10-month international manhunt under Operation SHAHID.
Gurwinder alias Afridi is allegedly a key kingpin of the Doni Bal–Prabh Dassuwal gang and has been under the radar of security agencies for his alleged involvement in organised criminal activities in Punjab, including extortion. The Punjab government had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to his arrest.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav shared the development in a post on X on Sunday, crediting the Anti-Gangster Task Force Punjab and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell of Counter Intelligence, Punjab, for coordinating the operation with Central agencies.
“We thank the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and all other central agencies as part of this international co-operation,” Yadav said.
According to the DGP, the operation involved sustained intelligence gathering, surveillance and tracking the accused across several countries in Asia, South America and Africa before he was traced to Ethiopia and deported.
Yadav said the Punjab Police remained committed to dismantling gangster networks, preventing organised crime and ensuring peace and security across the state.
The deportation is being viewed as a significant development in efforts to target organised criminal networks and bring gangsters operating from foreign countries back to face legal action.
Further investigation is underway to establish the extent of Afridi’s alleged involvement in criminal activities and the operations of his network in Punjab.
