Ranchi, November 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The death of tribal rights activist Nisha Bhagat, who allegedly died by suicide after a Facebook Live session, has triggered a political controversy in Jharkhand, with the BJP demanding an impartial investigation and action against those she named in the video.

The BJP has sought a response from Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi, said Bhagat had named the Chief Minister, Pithoria police station officer-in-charge and Ajay Tirkey in her livestream.

Marandi described her death as deeply distressing and alleged that her statements exposed the state of affairs in Jharkhand. He accused some people of attempting to encroach upon tribal land at the Chief Minister’s behest and demanded the arrest of those named by Bhagat. He also called for an impartial investigation and said Hemant Soren should resign, taking responsibility for the situation.

BJP state president Aditya Sahu accused the police and administration of negligence. He said Bhagat had expressed her distress and apprehensions during the Facebook Live session, which was watched by many people, but the police allegedly failed to reach the spot in time. He said timely intervention could have helped save her life and called for an investigation into the conduct and alleged remarks of those mentioned in the video.

Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth expressed grief over the incident and said Bhagat had levelled serious allegations against the state government and people associated with the land trade. He called for an investigation to establish the circumstances that led to her death and raised concerns over women’s safety and the law-and-order situation in the state.

Bhagat, a prominent tribal rights activist from Pithoria in Ranchi district, died on Friday after allegedly attempting suicide during a Facebook Live session. She was taken to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in critical condition, where doctors later declared her dead, officials said.

In the livestream, Bhagat appeared distressed while speaking about her prolonged struggle against alleged land mafias, attempts to defame her and issues relating to the system and governance. She said she had been fighting alone for a long time and felt abandoned. She also expressed concern about the grief her actions would cause her parents.

Bhagat further claimed that people associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP, whom she had expected to support her, had failed to stand by her. She also voiced anger over being labelled a “dalal” and alleged that no action had been taken against those tarnishing her image.
