Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Friday that two oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz through what it described as an “unauthorised” route.
In a statement published on its official news outlet, Sepah News, the IRGC Navy said both vessels had switched off their navigation and identification systems and were attempting to exit the strait through the unauthorised route with support from the US military. The vessels were stopped after striking naval mines, it claimed.
The IRGC Navy maintained that the Strait of Hormuz remained closed and said there would be no change in the waterway’s status unless the United States met Iran’s seven conditions. It also warned that attempts by US Central Command forces to push oil tankers through the mined route would result in repeated defeats.
On Thursday, the IRGC reported that three vessels, including two supertankers, had caught fire in two separate incidents the previous night while attempting to cross the strait through what it called an “illegal and unauthorised” route south of the waterway.
According to the statement, one oil tanker caught fire after hitting naval mines. In the second incident, another tanker caught fire east of the strait while attempting to leave through the same route. A tugboat that approached to help contain the blaze also caught fire.
In a separate operation, the IRGC said members of its naval electronic warfare unit had taken control of two “invading” low-cost uncrewed combat attack system drones and landed them safely.
The Iranian force also accused the US government of exposing American taxpayers and its West Asian allies to “very heavy” insurance costs by encouraging vessels to use the mined route in the strait.
