At least four militants were killed and another injured in a gunfight between suspected rival Naga militant groups in Manipur’s Noney district on Wednesday, officials said.
A heavy exchange of fire broke out early in the day at Taodaijang village in the Khoupum area between cadres suspected to belong to the Zeliangrong United Front-Jenchui (ZUF-J) and the Zeliangrong United Front-Kamson (ZUF-K), a police official said.
According to initial reports, the gunfight continued for several hours, leaving three ZUF-J cadres and one ZUF-K cadre dead. Local residents recovered the bodies of the slain militants.
Following the incident, residents, including women, reached the spot in an attempt to prevent further violence. They also used a public address system to appeal to the armed cadres to stop firing, the official said. Further details are awaited.
Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has directed senior security officials to identify active armed groups, excluding those engaged in peace talks with the state government, suspected of involvement in recent incidents of violence.
A senior Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) official said the directive was issued during a law and order review meeting on Tuesday night. The Chief Minister also asked security agencies, including the Army and central paramilitary forces, to submit a detailed report on the suspected involvement of these groups at the earliest.
Khemchand Singh said the state Cabinet would consider declaring such groups unlawful if the findings establish their involvement in violence against innocent civilians. He also made it clear that action would be initiated against groups continuing to perpetrate violence against the civilian population, the CMO official said.
