BJP leaders on Wednesday welcomed the Assam Cabinet’s decision to make polygamy a ground for dismissal from government service, with several calling for the policy to be implemented across all states.
BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo described polygamy as a social evil that adversely affects women. He said those practising it should face not only dismissal from government jobs but also legal action and imprisonment.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh also supported the move, saying, “I think every state should implement this now.”
Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi called the decision a historic step towards women’s empowerment and social justice. Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav also backed the Assam government’s action, saying multiple marriages can make women’s family and personal lives difficult.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the Cabinet decision on November 3, stating that the provision would apply to government employees across religious communities.
The Cabinet has approved amendments to the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, making polygamy a ground for dismissal. Employees found practising polygamy would lose their jobs and be disqualified from future government employment.
“The Assam Cabinet has decided that if any Assam government employee is found to be polygamous, he or she will be dismissed from service,” Sarma said.
