Actress Pavitra Punia has weighed in on the debate surrounding firecrackers during Diwali, questioning why the festival is frequently singled out over noise pollution while loud sounds during weddings and other celebrations receive less criticism.
In a video message, the actress described herself as an animal lover and said her own dogs were frightened not only by firecrackers but also by traffic horns and other sudden, loud noises.
“My dogs are equally scared of traffic, just like a horn sounds outside, just like something falls. So the problem with pets is not that they are afraid of firecrackers. They are afraid of any dark, heavy sound,” she said.
Pavitra also condemned people who deliberately harass animals during festivals and called for action against those responsible. At the same time, she urged people to celebrate responsibly and ensure that no animal or bird is harmed.
Questioning what she described as selective criticism of Diwali celebrations, she compared objections to firecrackers with the celebrations accompanying weddings and anniversaries.
She said people should not be biased against their own festivals and should be allowed to celebrate while remaining mindful of others and animals.
“Just stay within the limits and celebrate festivals. No animal should be troubled because of us. Happy Diwali!” she said.
In a lighter segment of the video, Pavitra also questioned the practice of undertaking extensive cleaning only around Diwali. She wondered why households did not maintain cleanliness throughout the year instead of turning it into an annual pre-festival exercise.
She jokingly asked why homes were cleaned so extensively before the festival and whether the practice was specifically prescribed in the Ramayana, directing the question at mothers.
