New Delhi, November 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday organised ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ marches across several states to counter the INDIA bloc’s rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.
In Shimla, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led a protest march that saw large participation from BJP workers. The march was scheduled to culminate in a rally at Chaura Maidan.
Targeting Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Sarma questioned whether elections in Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Rae Bareli should also be cancelled.
“Should the Himachal Pradesh election be cancelled or not? Should the Kerala election be cancelled or not? Should his own election from Rae Bareli be cancelled or not? Let the Congress governments (in states where the party is in power) resign first; then they should come to us (to demand resignation),” he told reporters.
He alleged that the Opposition questioned electoral processes only in states where the BJP won, while accepting the results where it emerged victorious.
“Let them boycott elections in Uttar Pradesh saying that vote theft has taken place…states where they (Opposition) win elections, the process is good for them, but they seem to find irregularities wherever the BJP wins polls,” Sarma said.
Speaking to IANS, the Assam Chief Minister also demanded Gandhi’s resignation as an MP, pointing out that he too had been elected in 2024 through EVMs.
“He was also elected in 2024, wasn’t he? He too was elected through EVMs. He should also resign,” Sarma said.
He claimed that the nationwide marches had drawn lakhs of people and alleged that the public was demanding that infiltrators leave the country.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur, who participated in the padyatra in Shimla, accused the Congress of spreading anarchy to obstruct India’s progress. He also referred to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, alleging that Congress leaders responsible for the massacre had chosen November 1 to target democracy and the Constitution.
Thakur further accused Rahul Gandhi of seeking support from foreign forces and said his alleged intention to bring about regime change would not succeed.
A similar march was held in Haryana’s Rohtak under the leadership of BJP National President Nitin Nabin.
In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde participated in a protest rally in Thane.
Shinde accused the Opposition of being jealous of the government’s work and claimed that it was speaking in Pakistan’s language.
“Amit Shah has eliminated Naxalism, and that is what they are jealous of. They (Opposition) are speaking the language of Pakistan…They have become puppets in the hands of foreign powers and are working to divide the country while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to unite the nation,” he told reporters.
Taking aim at Rahul Gandhi, Shinde questioned the Opposition’s criticism of electronic voting machines despite its own MPs and MLAs being elected through them in states governed by the Congress.
“They hold a copy of the Constitution in their hands but organise protests against the Supreme Court and the Election Commission, and call EVMs fraudulent. Even their MPs and MLAs in whichever states (the Congress) is in power have been elected through the EVMs. Are their elections not valid?” he said.
Maharashtra BJP President Ravindra Chavan said citizens were participating in the march to protect democracy.
“The institutions established under the Constitution, which form the foundation of our democracy, are being targeted and undermined in different ways. Therefore, this march was organised today in Thane by the Mahayuti alliance,” he said.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske also accused the INDIA bloc of adopting new tactics to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi and obstruct the country’s progress.
He alleged that Rahul Gandhi was repeatedly refusing to accept the people’s mandate and cited disruptions in Parliament and protests against the Supreme Court as examples.
