The Consulate General of India in Chicago is closely monitoring developments after US authorities foiled an alleged mass-shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, and arrested a 19-year-old suspect.
In a statement, the Indian mission said it was aware of reports concerning the attempted attack and appreciated the timely intervention of law enforcement authorities.
“The Consulate is aware of reports concerning a foiled attempt to target a place of worship in Aurora, Illinois. We appreciate the timely action by law enforcement authorities,” it said.
“We are in touch with members of the Indian diaspora and are closely monitoring developments,” the statement added.
The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, appeared before a court on Wednesday and was charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. He was remanded to custody until October 30, when he is scheduled to appear in court again.
According to prosecutors, Paporakis allegedly attempted to open fire at a Hindu temple in Aurora, around 70 kilometres from Chicago, on Saturday, but his rifle failed to fire when he pulled the trigger. He subsequently fled the scene.
The alleged plot came to light after Paporakis contacted a co-worker at a fast-food restaurant on Sunday and reportedly admitted that he had attempted the shooting. The co-worker alerted police in Mount Prospect, who passed the information to authorities in Palatine.
Paporakis was arrested outside his home in Palatine, approximately 60 kilometres from Chicago.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord said a search of the suspect’s residence uncovered a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and body armour bearing designs associated with white supremacist extremism.
Prosecutors said the suspect had also sent his co-worker a photograph of himself wearing a tactical vest and an eight-page document titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)”.
According to court documents, the document contained racist statements targeting people of Indian descent and a Hindu temple. Prosecutors alleged that Paporakis had planned the attack for approximately two years and expressed an intention to kill as many people from minority communities as possible.
“Reading through the manifesto, he did state some extremist ideologies and talked about violence; he talked about mass killings and how he wanted to carry out this mass shooting,” Nord said.
Authorities also said the suspect’s writings expressed hatred towards Jewish people and other non-white communities, including African Americans. Police worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to access his electronic devices and communications as part of the investigation.
Prosecutors further cited concerns about the suspect’s behaviour in the days preceding his arrest. His co-worker reportedly described him as behaving manically over the weekend.
The case has drawn attention to security concerns surrounding places of worship and the safety of Indian-origin communities in the United States. The Indian consulate said it would remain in contact with members of the diaspora as the investigation proceeds.
