Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon opened up about the emotional significance of tattoos and shared the touching story behind her daughter Rasha Thadani’s butterfly tattoo while appearing as a special guest on the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer.
During a segment, contestant Anshika asked Raveena to convince her mother to let her get a tattoo. The actress responded by sharing stories behind her own tattoos and explaining why she believes getting inked is an emotional decision rather than merely a fashion statement.
Raveena revealed that Rasha got her butterfly tattoo after the death of her Nana. According to the actress, Rasha believes that butterflies appearing around her whenever she goes shooting are a sign that her grandfather is blessing her.
She explained that the butterfly tattoo incorporates colours associated with Mahadev and Lord Krishna. The design also features Lord Krishna’s peacock feather within the butterfly’s wings and Mahadev’s Neelkanth symbolism.
“For Rasha, these symbols represent that they are guiding her through life. For her, these are the three things that are supporting her through her life. This is a very emotional thing; it’s not something to be taken lightly,” Raveena said.
Raveena also spoke about the long tradition of tattooing in India, particularly in villages, Rajasthan and tribal communities. She noted that traditional tattooing was done with a needle and said she considers tattoos deeply personal.
The actress said she has tattoos of her children’s names as well as paw prints because of her love for animals.
Recalling a humorous incident involving her own scorpion tattoo, Raveena said she once took a scorpion design from a newspaper to a parlour that specialised in eyebrow tattoos. When she told the artist she wanted the design near her shoulder, the artist mistook the scorpion for a “zhinga” (prawn).
Raveena eventually had the scorpion tattoo done properly in Los Angeles in 1992. She reiterated that, for her, tattoos are not about making a fashion statement but carry emotional meaning.
Advising Anshika, she urged her to understand the significance of getting inked and choose a symbol with personal meaning. She suggested a tattoo expressing her bond with her parents, saying they would remain with her throughout her life.
During the episode, Bollywood actress and India’s Best Dancer judge Karisma Kapoor also recalled that Raveena was among the early actors to sport a visible tattoo at a time when tattoos were not easily available in India.
