Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) working president and MP Supriya Sule on Monday described the deaths of three newborns in a fire at a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Amravati district as a “glaring example of negligence” and demanded a thorough investigation.
The fire broke out at around 3.30 a.m. on the third floor of the hospital’s newly constructed building. According to preliminary reports, an explosion involving a ventilator in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) triggered the blaze, filling the ward with smoke.
Three infants died of suffocation, while six others are undergoing treatment at a local Super Speciality Hospital.
Reacting to the incident, Sule said the tragedy was “extremely heart-wrenching” for the families who had been awaiting the arrival and recovery of their newborn children.
“This is not merely an accident but a glaring example of negligence in the system,” she said, calling for the strictest possible action against those found responsible.
Sule also demanded fire safety audits of all government and private hospitals across Maharashtra, along with safety checks of medical equipment.
Duty doctors, nurses and hospital staff reportedly rescued several infants after detecting the fire. The third floor houses three NICU wards with a combined capacity of 39 beds. The affected unit reportedly had between nine and 12 high-risk premature infants receiving critical care.
The incident has raised questions about the hospital’s emergency preparedness. Despite the building being inaugurated about a year ago, the automated fire suppression system reportedly failed to activate.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire, including whether the ventilator involved was outdated, inadequately maintained or suffered a technical failure.
Sule expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured newborns.
