Patna, October 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Janata Dal (United) has expelled Mokama MLA Anant Singh and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, from the party for six years over alleged anti-party activities during the recent Bihar Legislative Council elections.

JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha announced the action on Saturday, citing alleged repeated violations of party directives, derogatory remarks against senior party leaders and Anant Singh’s opposition to the party’s official candidate in the Patna Graduates’ constituency election.

In a letter announcing the decision, Kushwaha said Anant Singh’s primary membership had been terminated for six years. The party has also revoked Neelam Devi’s primary membership and expelled her for the same period over her alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

The JD(U) has separately approached the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, seeking action against Anant Singh’s legislative membership under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with disqualification on grounds of defection. Any decision on disqualification rests with the competent constitutional authority.

Dispute Over Patna Graduates’ Constituency

The action follows a public dispute between Anant Singh and JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar during the election for the Patna Graduates’ constituency of the Bihar Legislative Council.

Anant Singh openly opposed Neeraj Kumar and extended support to Anuj Singh, who contested the election on a Jan Suraaj ticket. His stand put him at odds with the party leadership during an important electoral contest.

Senior JD(U) leaders reportedly made several attempts to resolve the differences. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, a senior party leader and close associate of Nitish Kumar, was reportedly sent to persuade Anant Singh to reconsider his position.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Health Minister Nishant Kumar and JD(U) National Working President Sanjay Jha were also involved in efforts to address the dispute. However, the attempts failed to produce a resolution.

Anant Singh’s Remark on Lalan Singh

The controversy intensified on October 23, the polling day, when Anant Singh reportedly said he did not recognise Lalan Singh.

He was quoted as saying that there were “a hundred Lalan Singhs in Bihar” and that he did not know him.

The remarks added to tensions between Anant Singh and the party leadership, which had expected support for its official candidate.

Speaker to Consider Membership Issue

The six-year expulsion marks a formal escalation of the dispute between Anant Singh and the JD(U). The party’s request to the Assembly Speaker has also opened a separate constitutional process concerning his legislative membership.

The developments have brought questions of party discipline and internal differences within the JD(U) into focus following the Bihar Legislative Council elections.
