In a significant boost to Madhya Pradesh’s horticultural heritage, the iconic Jumbo Custard Apple (Sitafal) from Seoni district has been officially granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.
The certification, issued in June, recognises the unique qualities of these giant fruits cultivated primarily in the wild and natural tracts of the Bhutbandhani area within the Chhapara block of Seoni.
Unlike the earlier confusion with Seoni Malwa in Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad) district, the GI tag specifically pertains to Seoni’s distinctive variety.
These custard apples are renowned for their exceptional size — often weighing between 200 grams and up to 1 kilogram, superior sweetness, creamy texture, and rich nutritional profile. The region’s unique soil, climate, and traditional farming practices in the forested tracts contribute to the fruit’s larger size and distinctive flavour compared to other varieties.
The application for the GI tag was filed in 2023 by representatives of the Bhutbandhani Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), including Sadam Singh Barkade and Rajkumar Bhalavi, in collaboration with the state Horticulture Department.
After three years of rigorous scrutiny, documentation of geographical specificity, and quality parameters, the registry approved the tag, providing legal protection against imitation and enhancing market value.
Local farmers, particularly around 3,000 tribal families involved in custard apple cultivation, are elated. The GI tag is expected to open doors for better pricing, exports, branding, and tourism-related opportunities. It will help establish Seoni Jumbo Sitafal as a premium product in national and international markets, similar to other GI-tagged fruits like Beed Custard Apple from Maharashtra.
Officials from the Horticulture Department highlighted that the tag will empower FPOs, promote sustainable farming, and preserve traditional knowledge. This recognition not only celebrates Seoni’s biodiversity but also ensures economic upliftment for rural communities, a senior official said. The development comes as Madhya Pradesh strengthens its GI portfolio, with other recent tags like Indori Malwi potato and Ratlam Garadu.
For Seoni, this is a sweet victory that ensures the potential of indigenous produce when backed by institutional support.(Agency)
