Security heightened in Poonch as Army conducts large-scale mock drill along LoC

Jammu, July 5, 2026

Security was intensified on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, especially along the Line of Control (LoC), to enhance operational preparedness and create safety awareness among civilians.

The Army conducted a large-scale mock drill across parts of Poonch district to improve operational readiness and familiarise civilians with safety measures during emergency situations.

The exercise, carried out simultaneously by Rashtriya Rifles and other Army units, simulated a militant attack and tested evacuation procedures, emergency response mechanisms, and coordination among the Army, police, civil administration and local residents.

Officials said the mock drills were conducted at multiple locations, including the Mendhar sector along the LoC and hinterland areas, to assess operational readiness and ensure seamless coordination among all agencies during contingencies.

Residents welcomed the initiative, saying such exercises help raise awareness and prepare people to respond effectively during emergencies.

Meanwhile, security has been further strengthened in Surankote and Mendhar following intelligence inputs suggesting that militants may attempt to infiltrate or carry out subversive activities in the region.

Officials said additional deployments have been made, while mobile vehicle check posts (MVCPs), surprise checking points, area domination patrols, foot patrols and quick reaction teams (QRTs) have been deployed to maintain a high level of vigilance. Surveillance of markets, educational institutions, public places and other sensitive installations has also been intensified.

Night patrolling and monitoring of vulnerable infiltration and escape routes have been stepped up as part of the enhanced security measures.

Officials appealed to the public to cooperate with security checks, avoid spreading unverified rumours, and immediately report any suspicious movement or unattended objects to the nearest security establishment or police.

Extraordinary vigil is being maintained along the LoC and the hinterland as thousands of Yatris arrive in Jammu and Kashmir each day to undertake the pilgrimage to Shiva’s abode in the Kashmir Himalayas.(Agency)
