Mumbai, July 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
In a fresh twist to the turbulent journey of Diljit Dosanjh’s much-awaited film ‘Satluj’, the OTT platform ZEE5 has withdrawn the film from streaming in India just two days after its digital premiere, saying it has been made unavailable “until further notice” in view of the “current developments.”
The film, based on the life of noted human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, premiered on ZEE5 on July 3 after years of delays, legal hurdles and censorship-related controversy. Originally titled ‘Punjab 95’, the film was released under its new title after an extended struggle to secure certification.
Announcing the decision through a statement posted on X and other social media platforms, ZEE5 thanked audiences for the overwhelming response the film received following its release.
“The response to Satluj since its release has been truly overwhelming. We are deeply grateful to every viewer who chose to subscribe, watch and champion the film. Your love and support have meant a great deal to us and to everyone who brought this story to life.”
The streaming platform reaffirmed its support for the film and its creators, saying it continued to stand firmly behind ‘Satluj’ and its creative vision.
“We believe powerful storytelling has the ability to inspire, endure and leave a lasting impact. We remain committed to championing authentic and meaningful narratives,” the statement said.
Film Unavailable in India
Confirming the removal of the film from its Indian catalogue, ZEE5 said:
“In light of the current developments, Satluj will be unavailable in India until further notice.”
The platform added that it was exploring “every appropriate avenue through due process” to restore the film for Indian audiences at the earliest possible opportunity.
Along with the official statement, ZEE5 posted a message on X that read:
“Satluj may have paused. But the conversation it started hasn’t. Thank you for the incredible love. We hope to bring it back soon.”
However, the platform did not specify the nature of the “current developments” that prompted the decision.
A Film That Faced Years of Hurdles
Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj has had one of the most difficult release journeys in recent Indian cinema.
The film, originally titled ‘Punjab 95’, was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in 2022. According to the filmmakers, the certification process stretched for nearly three years, with multiple rounds of suggested edits.
Honey Trehan had earlier revealed that the film initially carried the title ‘Ghalughara’, which was changed during the certification process. He also said the CBFC objected to the phrase “inspired by true events” and sought numerous changes before certification.
Earlier reports had also claimed that the film was asked to undergo over 120 cuts, although the filmmaker has spoken publicly about multiple rounds of revisions during the certification process.
The film was also scheduled to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023. However, the screening was withdrawn after objections were reportedly raised by Indian authorities.
Star Cast
The film stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, supported by Kanwaljeet Singh, Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
With ZEE5 now withdrawing the film from its Indian platform, the future of Satluj in the country remains uncertain, even as the streaming service says it is committed to bringing the film back after following due process.
