Punjab MC Poll Results: AAP Sweeps 5 Corporations, Cong, BJP Bag One Each; SAD Draws a Blank

Chandigarh, May 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News):
The ruling Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) registered a dominant performance in the Punjab Municipal Corporation elections, securing clear majorities in five of the eight corporations that went to polls. The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win one corporation each, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) failed to secure a majority in any civic body.

AAP emerged victorious in Barnala, Batala, Bathinda, Moga and Mohali Municipal Corporations, further strengthening the party’s urban footprint in Punjab. Congress secured Kapurthala Municipal Corporation, while BJP retained its hold over Abohar. Pathankot, however, delivered a hung verdict with BJP emerging as the single largest party.

Abohar: BJP Retains Stronghold

The BJP registered an emphatic victory in Abohar Municipal Corporation, considered a stronghold of former Punjab BJP president Sunil Kumar Jakhar. The saffron party won 28 out of 50 wards to secure a clear majority.

AAP secured 20 seats, while the Congress managed to win just one seat. SAD failed to win any ward, while one Independent candidate also emerged victorious.

Barnala: AAP Dominates

In Barnala Municipal Corporation, AAP delivered a massive victory by winning 36 out of 50 wards. The region falls under the influence of Sangrur MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and also has political significance for newly-appointed Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon, who had earlier represented the constituency.

BJP secured seven wards, Congress won two seats, while Independent and other candidates captured five wards. SAD again failed to open its account.

Batala: AAP Gets Clear Mandate

AAP also secured a comfortable majority in Batala Municipal Corporation by winning 30 out of 50 wards. The constituency is represented by AAP MLA Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi, who also serves as vice-president of the party’s Punjab unit.

Congress won 18 wards, while BJP managed to secure two seats. SAD failed to win any seat in the corporation.

Bathinda: AAP Continues Winning Run

Bathinda Municipal Corporation also went in favour of AAP, which won 35 out of 50 wards. Congress managed to secure five seats, while SAD and BJP won three and one seats respectively. Six wards were won by Independent and other candidates.

Kapurthala: Congress Registers Lone Big Win

The Congress managed to retain its influence in Kapurthala Municipal Corporation under the leadership of MLA and former MP Rana Gurjeet Singh. The party secured 31 out of 50 wards, comfortably crossing the majority mark.

AAP won 11 seats, while BJP and SAD secured three wards each. Two wards went to Independent candidates.

Moga: AAP Secures Comfortable Majority

In Moga Municipal Corporation, represented by AAP MLA Amandeep Kaur Arora, the ruling party won 30 wards to secure a clear mandate.

Congress won seven seats, while BJP and SAD secured three seats each. Independent and other candidates won seven wards.

Mohali: AAP Holds Fort

Mohali Municipal Corporation remained firmly in AAP’s control, with the party winning 26 out of 50 wards. The civic body is considered the political stronghold of AAP MLA and former Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh.

Congress secured 12 wards, SAD won four seats and BJP managed three. Independent candidates won four wards. In a notable development, Advocate Kunwar Singh Sidhu, son of former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, lost the election.

Pathankot Delivers Hung Verdict

Pathankot Municipal Corporation produced a fractured mandate, with BJP emerging as the single largest party by winning 22 wards — four short of the majority mark.

Congress remained close behind with 18 seats, while AAP won 10 wards. Political observers believe the possibility of a post-poll alliance remains uncertain, as BJP is unlikely to align with either Congress or AAP.

Pathankot Assembly constituency is represented by Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma.

The results are being viewed as a major morale booster for AAP ahead of future electoral battles in Punjab, while the SAD’s poor performance is likely to intensify concerns within the party over its declining political relevance in urban Punjab.
