Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated India’s para-athletes for their historic performance at the Asian Para Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where the country secured a record 114 medals to finish fourth in the overall standings.

India concluded its campaign with 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze medals, surpassing its previous best of 108 medals, including 27 gold, achieved at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, China.

In a post on X, Modi praised the contingent for its determination and outstanding achievements, describing the performance as a moment of immense pride and joy for the country.

He congratulated every member of the Indian team, noting that the athletes had contributed to the historic achievement and inspired countless Indians through their accomplishments.

The latest performance marked another major milestone for India’s para-sport movement, with the country crossing the 100-medal mark for the second consecutive edition. India achieved the feat despite fielding a smaller contingent than the one that competed in Hangzhou in 2023.

Para-athletics emerged as India’s biggest medal contributor, accounting for 65 medals, comprising 22 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. Para-badminton followed with 16 medals, including three gold, five silver and eight bronze, while para-swimming added 11 medals, comprising three silver and eight bronze.

India also performed strongly in para-archery, securing six medals, including three gold. Shooting contributed five medals, with two gold, two silver and one bronze.

The contingent added seven bronze medals in para-table tennis, two silver in powerlifting and two medals in judo, comprising one silver and one bronze.

Among the standout performers was javelin thrower Sumit Antil, who successfully defended his gold medal in the men’s F42–F44/F61–F64 category. He was also part of a podium sweep, underlining India’s strength in the discipline.

Sprinter Simran Sharma delivered an impressive campaign, winning gold in both the women’s 100-metre and 200-metre T12 events. She also set Games records in both disciplines, establishing herself as one of India’s leading performers at the event.

Shooting provided further highlights, with Mona Agarwal winning gold in the women’s 50-metre rifle three positions SH1 event with record scores. India also secured two shooting quota places for the 2028 Summer Paralympics.

The Games featured notable achievements across age groups. Jehan Dorab Madan, aged 50, became India’s oldest medallist at the event after winning bronze in para-table tennis, adding another milestone to the country’s record-breaking campaign.

India’s 114-medal tally reflects the continued progress of its para-athletes on the international stage, with strong performances across athletics, badminton, swimming, archery and other disciplines.
