India’s PV Sindhu finished runner-up at the BWF French Open Super 750 badminton tournament after losing to South Korea’s world No. 1 An Se Young in the women’s singles final on Sunday.
The two-time Olympic medallist went down 21-16, 11-21, 12-21 at the Arena Grand Paris after making a strong start and claiming the opening game. However, An fought back in the second game and maintained her dominance in the decider to secure the title.
The defeat denied Sindhu the opportunity to become the first Indian woman since 1998 to win the French Open crown. Aparna Popat was the last Indian woman to achieve the feat.
The victory also extended An’s unbeaten head-to-head record against Sindhu to 11-0, with the South Korean having won all their previous 10 encounters.
For Sindhu, currently ranked world No. 11, the final marked her second Super 750 title-round appearance of the year. She had won the Japan Open in July, defeating Japan’s three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi to claim her first BWF title since December 2024 and her maiden Super 750 crown.
Sindhu reached her first French Open final after defeating Japan’s Hina Akechi 21-10, 20-22, 21-16 in a hard-fought semifinal. Earlier in the tournament, she survived a challenging opening-round encounter against Thailand’s Supanida Katethong before registering straight-game victories over Japan’s Riko Gunji and Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-chian.
An entered the final with a remarkable 65-1 win-loss record in 2026. Her latest victory further strengthened her outstanding season, extending her winning streak to 50 matches, according to the tournament report.
