Salma Hayek Recalls Hollywood Doubts as ‘Frida’ Marks 24 Years Since Release

Los Angeles, October 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Actress Salma Hayek has recalled the challenges of bringing Frida to the screen, saying she was once told that the film would never be made because its story was considered too different for Hollywood.

Marking 24 years since the biographical drama’s release on October 25, Hayek shared glimpses from the film on social media and reflected on the resistance she faced while trying to tell the story of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

“There was a time when I was told this film would never happen. That a story like Frida was not ‘easy’ for Hollywood. That it was too Mexican, too intense, too political, too different. In other words: that it wouldn’t work,” Hayek wrote.

Directed by Julie Taymor, Frida explored Kahlo’s life, art and personal struggles. The film earned critical acclaim, bringing the celebrated artist’s turbulent journey and distinctive creative vision to a wider audience.

Hayek has continued to pay tribute to Kahlo and the resilience that shaped her artistic legacy. In September 2025, the actress commemorated the centenary of the bus accident that dramatically changed the artist’s life.

Kahlo was 18 when the accident left her with severe injuries and confined her to bed for months. During her recovery, she began painting, eventually developing the distinctive artistic style that made her an internationally recognised figure.

Reflecting on that turning point last year, Hayek wrote that Kahlo’s solitude, mirror and paintbrush helped her explore her inner world. What began as a way to endure pain, the actress noted, became a lasting artistic legacy rooted in strength, identity and resilience.

More than two decades after its release, Frida remains a significant project in Hayek’s career, while her anniversary message highlighted the challenges of bringing a culturally specific and politically complex story to mainstream cinema.
