Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has decided to skip the Korea Open and Japan Masters after a demanding run of tournaments, choosing to rest and prepare for the BWF World Tour Finals scheduled in December.
Sindhu recently won the women’s singles title at the Hylo Open in Germany, securing her second BWF World Tour title of the season after the Japan Open Super 750 in July. She also reached the final of the French Open, where she lost to world No. 1 and Paris 2024 champion An Se-young of South Korea.
The Hylo Open victory marked her seventh BWF World Tour title and made this her first season since 2022 with multiple tour titles.
Speaking during a media interaction facilitated by the Badminton Federation of India, Sindhu said her initial plan was to compete in the upcoming tournaments but she later decided to listen to her body and focus on recovery.
“Initially, the plan was okay; I’ll be playing other tournaments, but I think it was important for me to take this decision that I would not be playing. It’s important that I need to take care of my body and get back stronger on court again,” she said.
Adding a lighter note, Sindhu said, “As I mentioned, I’m not young anymore, but also I mentioned 31 is the new 21, so I need to take care of my body, isn’t it?”
Sindhu also discussed badminton’s new 3×15 scoring system, which is set to come into effect on January 4, 2027. She said players would need to remain alert from the beginning, as losing a few early points could put them under considerable pressure.
“It’s important that you have to be alert from the beginning. From the beginning you need to be on your toes,” she said, adding that players could no longer afford to give away easy points.
