New Delhi, November 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

UAE left-arm wrist-spinner Uddish Suri says months of preparation and his belief in manifestation helped him dismiss India’s batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during last year’s Under-19 Asia Cup.

Sooryavanshi had smashed 171 off 95 balls, including 14 sixes, against the UAE at the ICC Academy in Dubai. While the Indian batter dominated the UAE attack, Suri conceded just 23 runs in 23 balls against him before bowling him out in his penultimate over.

Recalling the dismissal in an interaction with IANS ahead of this year’s Under-19 Asia Cup, Suri said he had studied Sooryavanshi’s videos and worked with UAE coaches to identify his strengths and plan his bowling.

“I believe in manifestation a lot. So, I think I had manifested that I would be the one getting this wicket,” he said, adding that discussions with head coach Naveed Ahmed and other members of the support staff helped him execute the plan.

The UAE are placed alongside India, Pakistan and Nepal in this year’s tournament, which begins in Oman on November 5. The UAE will face India on November 10. Suri said the team had trained for around three-and-a-half months and was looking forward to the challenge.

Suri, who started playing cricket at the age of four, developed an interest in the sport by watching his elder brother Tanish, a UAE international wicketkeeper. He initially began as a pace bowler before switching to left-arm wrist-spin on his coach’s advice.

He looks up to Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad for T20 cricket and India’s Kuldeep Yadav for the 50-over format, admiring their variations, pace and trajectory.

His elder brother continues to play an important role in his development, offering technical advice during training sessions. Suri also credited his parents for their sacrifices and constant support, recalling how they attended matches even in the UAE’s extreme summer heat.

Alongside cricket, Suri is pursuing mechanical engineering at university. He said balancing academics and sport was important because education would support him beyond his playing career.

Looking ahead to the Asia Cup, Suri said the UAE were aiming to challenge the stronger teams and hoped to qualify for the semi-finals. He also thanked the Emirates Cricket Board and the coaching staff for their support and preparations.

After the tournament, Suri is scheduled to feature in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
