New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips has described the high-scoring opening T20I against India as a fantastic contest, saying close matches help attract spectators back to stadiums and benefit the game.
India chased down a target of 226 with four wickets to spare at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, making the series opener a memorable run-fest. Speaking ahead of the second T20I at the same venue on Saturday, Phillips said the closely fought contest was encouraging for cricket.
“Yeah, it’s fantastic, great for cricket. To be able to have a game like that, going 220, playing 220, I think it’s great for this crowd. It brings people back, and that’s great for the game,” he said.
Phillips played a major role in New Zealand’s imposing total, smashing an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries. He also switched to batting left-handed against Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the final ball of the innings and struck a four to help New Zealand finish at 225/4.
The batter revealed that he practises left-handed batting, particularly during the Indian Premier League, when he gets access to extensive net sessions, sidearm deliveries and throwdowns.
“You can’t use it if you don’t practice it,” Phillips said, explaining why he works on the unconventional technique.
With less than 48 hours between the first two matches of the five-game series, Phillips also highlighted the importance of rest and recovery. He said several players made the most of Christchurch’s pleasant weather to play golf and take their minds off cricket before returning refreshed for the next fixture.
Phillips himself took a short break with friends, flying to Newton Peak and the Southern Alps. He said the outing helped him clear his mind and return ready for the second match.
India and New Zealand were set to meet again at Hagley Oval on Saturday, with the hosts looking to respond after losing the opening encounter.
