Cyber East Police have arrested a mother-son duo from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly operating a fake detective agency website and cheating a man of Rs 1.15 lakh, officials said.
The accused have been identified as Poonam Singh, 45, and her son Arnav Singh, 22. Police said they were allegedly operating SleuthIndia.com, a fraudulent website designed to resemble the genuine detective agency website SleuthsIndia.com.
The case came to light after Bhanu Pratap Singh, who was looking online for detective services, contacted the accused through a mobile number listed on the fake website. He was allegedly induced to pay Rs 1.15 lakh on the pretext of availing detective and investigation services.
According to police, the money was deposited into an IDFC First Bank account held in Poonam Singh’s name and was subsequently transferred to other bank accounts.
Following the complaint, E-FIR No. 363/2026 was registered at PS Cyber East under Sections 318(4), 319(2) and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A dedicated team led by Inspector Pawan Yadav, SHO, PS Cyber East, and supervised by ACP/Operations East District Amandeep Kaur, conducted technical and financial analysis of the fraudulent website, mobile numbers, email IDs, communication records and bank transactions.
The investigation allegedly led police to the accused at SUN-3, Migsun Roof, Sikrod, Ghaziabad, where Arnav was arrested. Police seized a laptop and mobile phone from him.
Poonam’s mobile phone was also seized. Police said it contained multiple mobile numbers, including one allegedly used to communicate with the complainant. She was subsequently arrested.
Both accused were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody. Police said further investigation is underway to trace the wider digital and financial network allegedly linked to the fraud.
Police said Poonam Singh has a previous case registered at Sarai Rohilla police station under Section 420 of the IPC.
A laptop and two mobile phones have been recovered for forensic examination.
Cyber East Police advised citizens to verify the authenticity of websites, service providers, contact numbers and payment details before making advance payments for online services.
