The hanging body of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker with his hands and feet tied was recovered in the Saheb Bagan area under Kalyani police station in Nadia district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Biswajit Sikdar.
According to local sources, he was an active BJP worker in the area. There is uncertainty about the cause of death. The police have started an investigation into whether it was a case of suicide or murder.
On Monday morning, residents found Biswajit’s hanging body in a mango orchard near the railway line, about a kilometre away from his house. They informed the family of the BJP worker. Soon, BJP workers went to the spot.
After receiving the news, officers of Kalyani police station reached the spot. The body was recovered and taken to Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial (JNM) Hospital.
After the doctors on duty confirmed Biswajit’s death, the body was sent for autopsy.
The BJP alleged that this was a well-planned political murder made to look like a case of suicide. The party claimed that Biswajit was called from his house and killed, and later hanged from the tree.
Biswajit’s father is the BJP president of booth number 127 of Kalyani Mandal-2. The family allegedly faced threats several times during the Trinamool Congress government’s rule due to their political affiliation. The family claimed that at one point, Biswajit was pressured to join the Trinamool.
Although the family of the deceased has not specifically accused anyone of murder, they have said they are trusting the police to conduct a fair investigation. However, they have also claimed that Biswajit could not have committed suicide.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and begun their investigation into the incident. Locals are being questioned to know more about the matter. However, no one has been arrested so far.
“The body has been sent for autopsy. Investigation is on,” said a senior officer of Nadia district police.(Agency)
