Renowned Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi has reacted strongly to the ongoing controversy surrounding former Indian cricketer and actor Yograj Singh and the web series Lukkhe, saying the episode highlights the growing decline in cultural sensitivity within the entertainment industry.
Jassi shared a detailed statement on his social media account after Yograj Singh was booked in Chandigarh over alleged derogatory and misogynistic remarks made in the Amazon Prime web series. Singh has also moved court seeking anticipatory bail in the matter after an FIR was registered against him at Sector 36 Police Station.
The controversy erupted after objections were raised against certain dialogues in the series allegedly portraying women in an offensive manner. The Punjab State Commission for Women also took suo motu cognisance of the matter and sought police action.
Commenting on the issue, Jasbir Jassi said many people may have earlier felt that he exaggerated matters when he claimed to have rejected several songs and projects because of objectionable wording and content. However, he said the present controversy had validated his long-standing concerns.
According to Jassi, writers and makers based in Mumbai often fail to understand Punjabi language, culture and the social fabric of Punjab, leading to the creation of objectionable content merely for commercial gains.
He alleged that Punjabi music and entertainment had increasingly been filled with vulgarity and double-meaning content over the years. Referring to songs and dialogues carrying offensive undertones, Jassi said such trends were damaging Punjabi society and culture.
Without directly targeting any individual artist, he cited examples of controversial songs and lyrics that, according to him, lacked meaning, grammar and cultural sensitivity, but still became commercially successful.
The singer expressed concern that audiences often celebrate such content without realizing its long-term social impact. He said Punjabi artists and performers must understand the cultural boundaries and moral responsibility associated with their language and identity, regardless of whether they are acting in a fictional character or performing in entertainment projects.
“People sitting in Mumbai may not fully understand Punjabi cultural sensitivities and traditions. Therefore, Punjabi artists themselves must decide what is acceptable and what is not,” Jassi said in his post.
He further emphasized that preserving clean and meaningful Punjabi music and culture was necessary for future generations.
The controversy surrounding ‘Lukkhe’ has continued to intensify in recent days. Apart from allegations regarding objectionable remarks against women, complaints were also raised over the reported use of Chandigarh Police uniforms in the series and the naming of a female character as “Gurbani,” which some complainants claimed could hurt Sikh religious sentiments.
A Chandigarh court has already issued notices to the administration and sought a response on Yograj Singh’s anticipatory bail plea by May 20.
