Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the reported demolition of a portion of a historic Gurdwara building at Farooqabad in Pakistan’s Sheikhupura district, allegedly carried out by certain individuals in an attempt to grab the property.
Taking serious note of the incident, Dhami urged the Pakistan Government to ensure the protection and preservation of Sikh religious heritage and take stringent action against those responsible.
According to information received by the SGPC, a section of the historic Gurdwara located in Mandi Sakrana, Farooqabad, was demolished by alleged land grabbers. The shrine is believed to date back to the Singh Sabha Movement and is associated with significant chapters of Sikh history.
Dhami said Pakistan is home to numerous historic Gurdwaras and Sikh heritage sites, and safeguarding these sacred places is the responsibility of the Pakistani government and local authorities.
He said such acts not only damage historical monuments but also hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs across the world.
The SGPC President appealed to the Pakistan Government and the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) to conduct an immediate and impartial inquiry into the incident, initiate strict legal action against those involved, and undertake restoration of the historic Gurdwara while preserving its original heritage.
Dhami further said that Gurdwaras and Sikh heritage sites associated with the Sikh Gurus in Pakistan are centres of faith for the global Sikh community. He stressed that robust measures should be put in place to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
