Kapurthala MLA and a senior Congress leader, Rana Gurjit Singh, today attacked the AAP government of Punjab over inordinate delay in conducting Mayor elections of Kapurthala Municipal Corporation.
“More than a month has passed, till the declaration of results. There is no communique from the government for conduction Mayor Elections. It clearly shows, how seriously this AAP government of Punjab follows democratic principles,” Rana Gurjit Singh.
“A letter requesting early elections has also been sent by me to Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner, the direct the local Corporation Commissioner to hold timely elections, but for no visible results,” he added.
“The results have already been officially declared and notified, any further delay in conducting the mayoral elections not only violates the statutory timeline but also stalls crucial urban development projects and administrative governance in Jalandhar. The Kapurthala residents are currently deprived of an active municipal leadership to address their daily civic grievances,” he further added.
In the results declared on May 29, the Congress won 31 out of 50 wards, while AAP won on 11, BJP and SAD won 3 each and Independents won 2 seats. Later, Aman Rani, a former Congress leader who won as independent, after denied ticket by party, officially announced to be a part of Congress, thus leading tally of Congress party to 32.
The Directorate of Local Bodies Department, vide memo number 44846-850 dated 05-06-2026, has also notified the results and declared that the Mayor of Kapurthala Corporation, will be from General Category.
Rana Gurjit alleged that local workers of AAP are trying to allure the Congress councillors to join the AAP by offering them money and posts.
“This inordinate delay undermines the integrity of the democratic mandate and creates an atmosphere highly vulnerable to political malpractices and horse-trading. Though, they are not going to succeed as I am proud of my team, but the government is leaving no stone unturned to dent the democratic principles,” Rana said.
