The Delhi Metro has maintained higher levels of train punctuality and reliability than several established metro systems across the world, including those in Hong Kong, Paris and New York, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said on Sunday.
The DMRC said its performance was particularly significant because it follows a stringent standard for measuring punctuality. A train is considered delayed if it reaches its destination station more than 59 seconds after the scheduled time, unlike systems that may classify a service as delayed only after several minutes.
According to the corporation, Delhi Metro’s punctuality improved from 98.27 per cent in 2003 to 99.64 per cent in 2005, enabling it to cross the 99 per cent mark within two years of commencing operations.
“Since then, DMRC has constantly achieved 99.9 per cent train punctuality, year after year,” it said.
Despite a substantial expansion in its network and fleet, along with the maintenance challenges associated with a large urban rail system, Delhi Metro recorded punctuality of 99.95 per cent in 2026, the corporation said.
Its reliability performance has also remained strong, with a Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF) of 2.72 million car-kilometres. The metric indicates the average distance travelled by metro trains before a service-affecting failure occurs.
The DMRC said international benchmarking by the Community of Metros (COMET), a consortium comprising 45 leading metro systems, has consistently placed Delhi Metro among the world’s top five systems for reliability under the two-minute delay criterion.
Train frequency has also improved considerably, with headway reduced from seven minutes during the network’s early years to 2 minutes and 18 seconds on its busiest corridors.
The DMRC further said it operates India’s largest driverless metro network, with about 29 per cent of its network running under Unattended Train Operation (UTO).
Line 7, covering 71.55 km with 45 stations, is described by the corporation as the world’s longest driverless metro line and one of the longest circular metro lines globally. It connects with almost all Delhi Metro corridors, barring a small section of the Grey Line, and has helped ease interchange congestion, reduce travel time and provide alternative travel options during disruptions.
The Delhi Metro began operations on December 25, 2002, with an 8.4-km, six-station corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari. It has since grown into India’s largest metro network, spanning 416.5 km across 303 stations on 12 lines, including 31 interchange stations connecting Delhi and the National Capital Region.
Ridership has increased sharply from around 82,000 passengers in the first year to a record single-day patronage of more than 81 lakh passenger journeys on August 8, 2025. Average daily ridership currently stands at 64.06 lakh journeys, according to the DMRC.
The corporation said its operational performance and technological innovations have also earned it several prestigious international awards in recent years.
