Aligarh, November 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has elected its Students’ Union office-bearers after an eight-year gap, with research scholar Noman Ashraf winning the president’s post and law student Nashra Naim making history as the first woman to secure one of the union’s three top positions.

BTech student Mohammad Hamdan was elected honorary secretary, completing the results announced on Friday morning after counting continued through Thursday night at the university’s ABK School campus.

Ashraf, a research scholar in the Department of History, secured 7,797 votes to defeat his nearest rival, Mohammad Intikhab, by 4,121 votes. His victory triggered celebrations among supporters on campus, with slogans raised and firecrackers burst.

Expressing happiness over the outcome, Ashraf said students had secured the opportunity to elect their representatives after a prolonged struggle of eight years. He described the result as a moment of great enthusiasm for the university community.

Hamdan, after winning the secretary’s election, said the mandate brought greater responsibility and pledged to work towards fulfilling the commitments he had made to students.

The most notable outcome came in the vice-president’s contest, where Naim became the first woman in AMU Students’ Union election history to win one of the three principal posts of president, vice-president or secretary.

Naim prevailed in a close contest against Saqib Ali Khan after seven candidates entered the race. She credited her victory to the dedication and support of a small team working with limited resources.

She also called for a redefinition of student leadership, saying several issues had emerged during the eight-year period and that concerns had existed even when the union was previously active.

Naim described the result as a victory for the wider student community and expressed hope that it would encourage a continuing trend of women’s participation in student leadership.

Polling for the elections was held on November 5 at 13 centres across the university. The results mark the revival of the AMU Students’ Union’s electoral process after an eight-year hiatus.
