The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Saturday honoured 11 Sikh candidates who cleared the 2025 Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination and were selected for higher administrative services, presenting each of them with ₹1 lakh as recognition of their achievement.

The initiative aims to encourage talented Sikh youth to pursue careers in higher education and administration while inspiring them to serve the community and the country in accordance with Sikh principles.

The 11 candidates honoured were Simarandeep Kaur, Rasneet Kaur, Sunavardeep Singh, Navneet Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Sarbaraj Singh, Harmanpreet Singh Sodhi, Japleen Kaur, Jaspreet Kaur, Kanwarpal Singh and Sandeep Singh.

Addressing the gathering, SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami congratulated the successful candidates and said their achievement was the result of their hard work and the support of their parents. He added that the families of the successful candidates also deserved congratulations for their contribution to the students’ success.

Dhami said the SGPC’s initiative recognised the candidates’ dedication and achievements while encouraging the younger generation to pursue higher education and administrative careers. He noted that the students had brought pride to their parents, teachers and the Sikh community.

Emphasising the importance of Sikh values in public service, Dhami urged the newly selected candidates to draw inspiration from the principles of service, truthfulness, humility and public welfare enshrined in Gurmat. He said their success should inspire other students to set ambitious goals, work with determination and dedicate their abilities to serving society.

He also called upon the candidates to discharge their responsibilities honestly and impartially, guided by the Sikh principles of Kirat Karo, Naam Japo and Vand Chhako—earn an honest living, remember God and share with others. He prayed that they would remain connected with Gurmat and work sincerely for the welfare of the country and society.

SGPC Providing Free Coaching for Competitive Examinations

Dhami said the SGPC was continuously working to help Sikh students prepare for competitive examinations. Through the Nishchay Academy for Administrative Services in Chandigarh, the committee provides free education each year to 25 deserving Sikh students. The academy also draws on the expertise of former IAS officers who have served in senior administrative positions.

Similarly, the Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Institute at Bahadurgarh in Patiala provides training each year to 25 students preparing for judicial services examinations.

Dhami said these initiatives were intended to create opportunities for talented Sikh students who might otherwise be held back by financial difficulties. He added that students who clear the preliminary examination could pursue further preparation in any city in the country according to their needs, with the SGPC extending support.

The successful candidates and their parents thanked Dhami and the SGPC for the recognition, describing it as a valuable honour that would continue to inspire the students to serve in accordance with the teachings and ideals of the Sikh Gurus. They said the initiative would also motivate other students to strive for success.

Earlier, SGPC secretary Balwinder Singh Kahlwan congratulated the candidates and their parents. Highlighting the committee’s activities, he said the SGPC, in keeping with the spirit of its establishment, not only manages gurdwaras but also plays an important role in education, healthcare and public welfare.

He added that the committee was undertaking significant initiatives to help students prepare for competitive examinations and advance in their careers.

Several SGPC office-bearers and members attended the event, including executive committee member Mangwinder Singh Khaparkheri; members Surjit Singh Bhittewad, Bawa Singh Gumanpura and Amarjit Singh Bandala; OSD Satbir Singh; additional secretary Bhagwant Singh Dhangera; Jaswinder Singh Jassi; Bijay Singh; deputy secretaries Harbhajan Singh Vakta and Azad Deep Singh; Sri Darbar Sahib general manager Major Singh; superintendents Nishan Singh and Malkit Singh Behrawal; and in-charges Baldev Singh and Karamvir Singh. Family members of the successful candidates were also present.
