New Delhi, October 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The controversy over ‘Free Kashmir’ slogans written on the walls of Jamia Millia Islamia intensified on Saturday, with BJP leaders demanding strict action against those responsible and opposition leaders also calling for an investigation while reiterating that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.

Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav described the slogans as objectionable and alleged that they reflected a separatist mindset. He said the university should investigate the matter and take action against anyone found responsible.

Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi also criticised the slogans, asserting that Kashmir was an inseparable part of India. He further alleged that slogans supporting Sharjeel Imam, an accused in cases linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, reflected attempts to promote separatism on campus.

Congress leader Udit Raj called for an investigation to identify those who wrote the slogans and said the university administration’s accountability should also be examined. He suggested that the Intelligence Bureau could investigate the matter, with the National Investigation Agency involved if warranted.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma said the slogans controversy should be examined separately from the students’ demand for restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU).

Verma maintained that the phrase ‘Free Kashmir’ was unacceptable, reiterating that Kashmir was and would remain an integral part of India. He also accused the BJP of using the controversy to portray opposition parties as aligned with anti-India forces.

Meanwhile, students continued their indefinite hunger strike and protest demanding restoration of the students’ union and the resumption of campus elections. A protesting student said Saturday marked the 13th day of the hunger strike and claimed that no student union elections had been held at the university since 2006.

The protesters maintained that their agitation was focused on restoring student representation and protecting their democratic rights, rather than opposing any particular political party.
