Actor Joe Manganiello has revealed that he wore an ostomy bag beneath his full Deathstroke armour while filming the closing scene of Justice League, as he continued recovering from a life-threatening illness that required the removal of his entire large intestine.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Manganiello spoke about the serious health crisis he experienced in 2016 and the prolonged recovery that followed. He said he had kept much of his struggle private for years because he did not want to be seen as “the sick guy”.
Recalling the emergency surgery, the actor said he collapsed and was rushed to hospital, where doctors initially struggled to identify the cause of his condition. He said surgeons eventually operated at the last moment and discovered that his large intestine had deteriorated severely and was at risk of rupturing.
After waking up, Manganiello was told that his intestine had been removed and that he might need an ostomy bag permanently. He said he lost 60 pounds in two weeks and had to relearn basic movements, including standing and walking.
While attempting to regain his strength, he received an opportunity to appear as Deathstroke in the closing scene of Justice League. Despite his uncertain recovery, he accepted the role, hoping the work would be possible as his health improved.
“What people don’t know is when I shot that scene for the end of Justice League in my full armour as Deathstroke, I’m probably the only villain ever with an ostomy bag on under the armour,” he said.
Manganiello described his illness as a seven-year ordeal marked by unpredictable setbacks. He said he wrote about the experience to help reduce the stigma surrounding serious illness and ostomy bags, encouraging patients and their families to speak more openly about their struggles.
