Five-time world champions Brazil showcased their quality with a commanding 4-0 victory over India in the first-ever senior international meeting between the two sides at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday.
India made an encouraging start, initially preventing Brazil from settling into their rhythm. However, the visitors gradually took control and scored twice before half-time.
Estevao opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a moment of individual brilliance. The winger made his way into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot towards the near post. India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu got a touch on the effort but was unable to keep it out.
Brazil doubled their lead in the 42nd minute, with Estevao setting up Pedro, who made a run behind the Indian defence. Pedro attempted to finish from a tight angle, and although Gurpreet appeared to have the effort covered, the ball slipped through his grasp and crossed the line.
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti made five substitutions at half-time, bringing on Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Magalhaes, Vanderson, Samuel Lino and Douglas Luiz.
The changes did little to disrupt Brazil’s dominance, as the visitors extended their lead in the 58th minute. India lost possession in a dangerous area, allowing Brazil to exploit the space on the left. Lino received the ball inside the penalty area and calmly finished into the far corner.
Lino struck again deep into stoppage time to complete his brace and seal Brazil’s 4-0 victory.
The match marked the first appearance of Brazil’s senior men’s national team in India, adding a historic chapter to the two countries’ long football association.
Ranked fifth in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, Brazil were the highest-ranked opposition India had faced since the ranking system was introduced. India are currently ranked 138th.
The Blue Tigers entered the contest following a 1-1 draw against 44th-ranked Panama, marking their first unbeaten result against a top-50 opponent.
