New Delhi, October 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Delhi Police has registered three FIRs in connection with Friday’s protests in the national Capital demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, officials said.
Two cases were registered at the Parliament Street Police Station and one at the Connaught Place Police Station, according to police officials. The FIRs were registered on the basis of daily diary entries made by police personnel.
The cases invoke Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), concerning disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant. Police officials said no individual or organisation has been named in the accused column of the FIRs, although details of organisers and organisations that proposed or participated in the demonstrations have been mentioned in the case records.

The FIRs followed a day of protests across central Delhi, as members and supporters of political parties, student organisations and civil society groups attempted to reach Jantar Mantar to raise their demands. Delhi Police had denied permission for the proposed demonstration and imposed prohibitory orders in the New Delhi district ahead of the protests.
Police detained hundreds of protesters during the mobilisation, with varying official and media estimates putting the number at more than 500 and around 1,000 across different locations in Delhi. Those detained included former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj, AISA president Neha Bora and Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav.
Several other AAP leaders, civil society activists, Left-backed student organisation members and Congress youth wing workers were also detained as police stopped groups attempting to move towards Jantar Mantar.
The demonstrations were held amid allegations by protesters regarding the SIR exercise and demands for accountability from the Election Commission. The protesters have sought Kumar’s resignation, while authorities have cited restrictions on unauthorised gatherings and public-order concerns in explaining the security measures around Jantar Mantar.
