Two Naga villagers were killed and two others injured after unidentified militants allegedly opened fire at Kalajan village in Manipur’s Naga-majority Senapati district on Saturday, police officials said.
The deceased were identified as Rocky Mao and Kumar Poumai. The injured, Adani Manio, 33, and Ashiho Sani, 49, were taken to a private hospital in Senapati for treatment. The bodies of the two victims were shifted to Senapati District Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The killings came two days after four men from the Tangkhul Naga community were allegedly shot dead in neighbouring Kamjong district.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the attack, describing the victims as civilians and expressing condolences to their families. He said the injured were receiving medical treatment.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the killings and raised concerns over the continuing violence in the state. He claimed the two men were shot inside their homes while they were asleep and questioned how long civilians would continue to be killed without those responsible being held accountable.
The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks in Manipur.
On Friday, bodies of four men — Betterson Jajo, Vareishim Jajo, Phami Jajo and Ningthem Kashak — were recovered from an isolated location near the Myanmar border in remote Pilong village of Kamjong district. All four belonged to the Tangkhul Naga community, with Phami Jajo being the son of Vareishim Jajo.
Police said the bodies bore bullet injuries and were recovered after a prolonged search by security personnel and local residents. They were being taken to Kamjong District Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Local residents alleged that suspected militants from neighbouring Myanmar crossed into India and ambushed a group of five villagers on September 24. One villager reportedly escaped and informed local authorities.
According to police, at least 13 people have been killed in separate gun attacks allegedly carried out by suspected militants across Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, Noney and Kamjong districts in September.
The identities of those responsible for the latest attacks have not been officially established.
