Wayanad, September 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday hit back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its criticism of the Congress’s allegations concerning the Election Commission of India (ECI), saying the BJP should stop making “lame excuses” amid the ongoing row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Interacting with reporters in her Kerala parliamentary constituency of Wayanad, Priyanka said the allegations were supported by what she described as facts and evidence presented publicly by her brother and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
“That’s a very stale and weak story. There are facts, and there is evidence. It is there for the whole country to see. My brother (Rahul Gandhi) has shown it in many different press conferences. He has put the evidence forward. Now it is very clear: 13 crore voters have been deleted,” she said.
“This is a lame excuse, and the BJP should stop making lame excuses. If they are meddling with the elections and if their leadership is making the Election Commission do this, then it is an act of treason, and they should be aware of it and take ownership,” she added.
The remarks came amid a political dispute following reports of differences within the three-member ECI over aspects of the SIR exercise. The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on multiple occasions concerning issues including electoral roll revisions and the poll panel’s information technology systems.
The ECI has rejected suggestions of an institutional “rupture”, saying that differing views, objections and written notes are part of deliberations within a multi-member constitutional body and that decisions are taken in accordance with the applicable law and through the prescribed process.
Priyanka also alleged that the BJP had become “overconfident” by allegedly “rigging” elections.
“If they (BJP-Centre) are doing it, then why can’t they say it? What are they scared of? How many years has it been that they have been rigging elections? Naturally, they are so overconfident all the time,” she said.
A day earlier, Rahul Gandhi had also attacked Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the BJP-led Centre over the issue. He called for Kumar’s resignation and alleged that votes were being “stolen”, while accusing those responsible of attacking the Constitution and the country’s democratic framework.
The allegations made by Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are political claims and remain disputed by the ECI and the BJP. The reported differences within the Commission and issues surrounding the SIR are the subject of ongoing public and legal scrutiny.
