One Indian seafarer was killed and 19 others were rescued after the commercial vessel MV Cape Dao came under attack off the east coast of Oman, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.
The MEA condemned the attack and said all 20 Indian seafarers were accounted for, with 19 rescued and one Indian national losing his life.
“We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel MV Cape Dao earlier today off the east coast of Oman. Of the 20 Indian seafarers on board, 19 have been rescued, while 1 Indian national tragically lost his life,” the Ministry said.
The MEA conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased and said the Indian Embassy in Oman was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities for the early repatriation of the rescued seafarers.
The Ministry also expressed concern over continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the region and called for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions.
It said the targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers and civilian infrastructure must end, while free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways in the region should be restored at the earliest.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat said the vessel was attacked while transiting towards India and that it was coordinating with Omani authorities over the safety of the crew.
The mission also said it was in touch with the deceased seafarer’s family and coordinating with the RPSL for further assistance.
The latest incident comes days after the MEA condemned an attack on another commercial vessel, MT El Gaia, off the Oman coast on September 13. The vessel was carrying 14 Indian nationals, of whom 13 were rescued while one remained missing.
At the time, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said search and rescue operations were continuing with the assistance of the Omani authorities.
