New Delhi, September 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress MP Imran Masood on Monday hit back at AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi over his appeal to political parties for an alliance ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, alleging that even after winning a handful of seats, AIMIM ends up supporting a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Masood said that even if Owaisi’s party manages to win five to seven Assembly seats, its elected representatives ultimately support a BJP government.

“What happened in Bihar? The BJP formed the government, didn’t it?” Masood asked.

He also said elections cannot be won solely on Muslim votes and that Muslims alone cannot ensure an electoral victory. According to Masood, the BJP has broken the perception that elections cannot be won without Muslim votes.

“If we continue to play on those lines, we will be making the BJP victorious. Muslims are the most oppressed community in Uttar Pradesh; they face the most atrocities and violence,” he said.

Owaisi’s remarks also drew criticism from other Congress leaders.

Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput alleged that AIMIM and the BJP were in alliance. Reacting to Owaisi’s statement, he said, “We appeal to the media not to spread confusion. There is no talk of an alliance from our side. Owaisi Sahib only talks about Muslims, while the BJP only talks about Hindus. Their alliance is with each other behind the scenes.”

Rajput further said there had been no discussion or talks about an alliance from the Congress side.

“No alliance can be formed by putting a gun to someone’s ear,” he said.

Another Congress leader, Asim Waqr, recalled a response Owaisi had given when a journalist questioned him about allegations of being a BJP agent.

Waqr also referred to political developments involving Owaisi’s father, Salahuddin Owaisi, and subsequent controversies including the Moradabad and Bhagalpur incidents and the Babri Masjid issue.

He claimed that AIMIM had continued to target the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP), describing both as “enemies of Muslims”, while now appealing to them to join an alliance.

“If indeed we are enemies of Muslims, then why are you asking to come into an alliance with us? And if at all you want us to join hands, then we are good people,” Waqr said.

The remarks come amid political activity ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with parties and leaders discussing possible alliances and electoral strategies.
